TSMSS Member Newsletter: August 2017

Message from the President

TSMSS is celebrating our 40th year!  Did you know that the Society was founded and affiliated with the Texas Hospital Association in 1977 with 100 members? The original objectives of the Society were set as:

  • Provide for the exchange of education, training, information, and ideas between those coordinating medical staff and administrative affairs in health care institutions;
  • Advance policies and practices of medical staff support personnel;
  • Promote high standards of endeavor for medical support personnel;
  • Encourage standard methods for documenting medical staff and administrative functions and procedures; and
  • Aid medical staff services in working toward uniform standards in Texas.

As part of our 40th anniversary celebration, we had the pleasure of welcoming back many of our past presidents to our 2017 conference in April. We asked them to share their words of wisdom with our current members and conference attendees.  You can read their responses via this web document: Past Presidents 1977-2017

Nearly 10 years ago, as a part of the 30th anniversary (but officially in 2008), the name changed to Texas Society for Medical Services Specialists to reflect the growing diversity of our discipline. Our members are in hospitals, managed care settings, physicians' offices, and in group practices. Just as the field of healthcare is changing, so is TSMSS!  We continue to strive to improve our industry and as an all-volunteer organization, we can’t do it without you!  That’s why I am personally asking you to consider being a part of this amazing group.  I have gained many friendships and sharpened many skills essential to my daily job functions – and you can too.  Nominations are now open and we would welcome your contributions in the coming years.

Your 2017-2018 TSMSS Board of Directors are continuing to work towards fulfilling our mission of bringing you programs to support your professional growth and certification. And as a result of your suggestions, we have some exciting announcements this month related to CPCS study preparations and networking opportunities while helping others in your community. You’ll find the details within this newsletter.

We hope that you will continue to engage with us, as we welcome your input and contributions at any time!

- Jennifer

2017 Conference Wrap-Up

Over the past few weeks, we have been organizing and distributing the head shots taken during the annual conference in April.  Our members will find their head shots loaded to their TSMSS profile. Please log in to view and save it.  Any non-members received their head shots via email.

The recorded material from our conference sessions will be available by October 1st.  If you missed a session, you may be able to still listen and receive CE credits for it!  Please see the Upcoming Webinars section of this newsletter for more details on our newest Webinars On Demand.

2018 Conference

Planning is underway for the 2018 TSMSS Annual Conference: “Growing Our Future: Beginners to Leaders”, which will be held at the Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria.  We will be sending a Save-the-Date soon with more details, but mark your calendar for April 17-22!

Planning a conference is quite a task. Volunteers are always needed with varied skill sets, and the more volunteers we have, the better our conference can be!  Currently, the conference committee is meeting monthly via teleconference.  If you would like to be a part of the Conference Committee, please reach out to Dee Crawford, President-Elect and 2018 Conference Chair. She would welcome your participation -

If you join TSMSS now for $65, you will receive the remainder of the 2017 membership year, as well as a full 2018 membership.  Along with this membership comes a free webinar!  It also will guarantee you the member rate for our 2018 annual conference as well as for any of our webinars.  This is an exciting year for TSMSS and you won’t want to miss our great member opportunities!  To become a member, simply visit our website.

Upcoming Webinars

We will be offering an opportunity to earn up to 8 CEUs on October 7, 2017.  Although this is designed to be a guided study group discussion, if you need additional CEUs or a refresher on some fundamental topics, you are also invited to join us via webinar.  You will likely not find a better offer this year - $50 for 8 CEUs!  You will find additional details below under the CPCS: Certification Focused Study Program.

We are excited to bring you the following On Demand Webinars which were recorded during our 2017 conference in April.  If you are interested in receiving CEUs on these topics, you will simply view the recorded session, answer 10 questions, and submit them for grading.  If you pass, you’ve earned the CEUs indicated.  These will be available soon on our website for purchase:

CPCS: Certification Focused Study Program (CFSP) We are excited to bring you an opportunity to help you prepare for your CPCS exam.  Join us Saturday, October 7, 2017 for a guided study session lead by Janet Wilson from Edge-U-Cate.

We will host the CFSP onsite discussion in Austin, TX, and also make this session available via simultaneous webinar. This will be an opportunity to earn up to 8 CEUs at an incredible price (pending NAMSS approval). It will also be an opportunity to meet those in your area who may be preparing for the certification exam as well.

Many of our chapters will be hosting a location where you can join your fellow MSPs during the session.  Additional details will be communicated in September regarding the exact locations in your area.

TSMSS is committed to bring you educational opportunities and we feel strongly that certification in our industry brings many benefits.  That is why TSMSS  will be covering the costs of the speaker, technology, and CEU application so that we can bring you an exceptional price on this session.  For $50 you will receive the course material once you have registered.  You can register via this link.

Fall Testing Period – If you are planning to sit for your certification exam this year, don’t forget to register before the upcoming deadline!

The Nominations Committee was convened to plan our 2018-2019 elections.  Recently, our members should have received an email inviting nominations.  We encourage you to think about running for one of the following positions if you have an interest and are able to use some of your time to give back to your profession each month:

  • President Elect
  • Treasurer
  • Director x2

If you have any questions about the process or the qualifications, feel free to contact your Immediate Past President, Kelsey Goughnour -

Get To Know Your TSMSS Board of Directors

We asked your TSMSS Board members to tell us a little about themselves. Featured members for this newsletter include Marie Cruthirds and Les Cook. Here is what they had to say:

Marie Cruthirds, Secretary:

1.         What Region of TX are you in? Gulf Coast

2.         Tell us something we don’t know about you. I love taking long walks in the woods and watching sunsets.

3.         Who inspires you? My Grandson, Bryce.  Bryce has Down Syndrome and has limited verbal skills but understands very well.  He loves completely, trusts completely, appreciates even the smallest kindness, and finds joy in the little things.  He is a high school freshman.

4.         What are you passionate about? I am passionate about our profession; I love to convey the “why” behind our mission to my peers, as well as to Physicians and Administrative Leaders and other stakeholders that I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with.

5.         What’s the coolest thing you’re working on?  Virtual classroom training for new medical staff employees of our organization.

6.         Who is your least favorite superhero and why? Robin (of Batman fame)—he’s entirely too immature to be superhero, and uses too many "Holy..." catchphrases like: ’Holy Roadblock’.

 Les Cook, Director-at-Large, Education:

1.      Tell us something we don’t know about you. When I lived in Germany (up to 2005) I owned a Porsche that I raced on tracks built from old military runways and on Formula 1 tracks like Hockenheimring and Nürburgring.

2.      What lead you to be on the TSMSS BOD? My love of our profession and the important work we do for patient safety. Volunteering is a great way to give back to all those that have helped me grow and pay forward to those who are new to our profession.

3.      What is your goal on the Board this year? I hope to increase the educational (as well as CEU) opportunities for our members.

4.      Who inspires you? My wife. My wife had some of the worst experiences you can imagine growing up. But she never let any of that define her. This lifelong inner strength would be called upon again when she had a stroke 4 years ago that was induced by a medical procedure. She started rehab that same day and worked hard to overcome the effects.  She was able to continue working and will retire from the US Air Force later this year.

5.      What are you passionate about? Life. We only have one and it is a limited time. There is no time for sitting around, you have to get out there and live it. Race cars. Go Scuba Diving. Go on safari in Africa. Travel through Europe by train. Have an adventure!

6.      What’s the coolest thing you’re working on? Designing and building our forever home near the beach. It’s going to be amazing!!

If you’d like to continue to get to know Marie and/or Les, reach out to them at and respectively. They would love to get to know you too, and they welcome your ideas to further our mission!

TSMSS Board Updates

In August, the TSMSS Board accepted the resignation of Veronica Rosas, Director-at-Large.  As per our bylaws, the Board was able to vet and appoint a new Director-at-Large to fulfill the remainder of her term.  Tracy Needs had expressed interest in serving on the Board to the point of agreeing to run for a Director-at-Large position in the last election cycle.  In speaking with Tracy, she is very eager to contribute, has many interests and is available to help anyone who may need her assistance.  Please join us in welcoming Tracy to our TSMSS Board!
