TSMSS Member Newsletter: October 2017

Message from the President

Happy Halloween! I hope this newsletter finds each of you doing well and gearing up for the holiday season!

Our national organization, NAMSS (of which TSMSS is an affiliate), held their annual conference this past week in Colorado Springs, CO. It was a great opportunity to re-connect with colleagues from across the country. Heck, I even met someone from Japan! What I always find so amazing about our profession is the ease with which we talk to each other. And there is never a shortage of topics to discuss! Because of this support and ease of interaction, I consider you all my second family and I always look forward to our family reunion! Our reunion (the TSMSS Annual Conference) is in the planning stages. I’ve seen how much fun you have at our reunions, and so I encourage you to mark your calendars and start planning to join us at the Marriott Quorum in Addison, TX from April 17th – April 21st 2018.

Our family is always looking for strong leaders to guide our future. If you have not already, please give some thought to nominating yourself or your peers to serve as leaders of TSMSS.  Nominations will close tomorrow (November 1st) and we would welcome your contributions in the coming years. More information can be found in this newsletter or online under our ‘Member Community / Nominations & Elections’ page.

As an extension of our family, you will not want to miss joining forces with your local chapters this Fall to take advantage of networking opportunities while helping others in your community. You’ll find the details within this newsletter.

We hope that you will continue to engage with us, as we welcome your input and contributions at any time!

- Jennifer

Get To Know Your TSMSS Board of Directors

We asked your TSMSS Board members to tell us a little about themselves. Featured members for this newsletter include Dee Crawford and Annie Snelling. Here is what they had to say:

Dee Crawford, President-Elect, 2018 Conference Chair:

  1. What Region of TX are you in? North Texas
  2. What lead you to be on the TSMSS BOD? I have been a part of TSMSS since the mid 90’s. I became involved with TSMSS when I was the Chapter President of PAMS. TSMSS continues to be important for MSP’s not only in Texas, but Oklahoma, Louisiana and New Mexico.  TSMSS is a great organization and is vital to our profession by providing information and education on a continuous basis. I am honored to have the ability to serve on the TSMSS Board again.
  3. What is your goal on the Board this year? My goal is to increase conference attendance not only virtually but on-site attendees.
  4. Who inspires you? The Lord inspires me the most. Knowing that he is always with me and will never forsake me. He doesn’t condemn or judge, but loves me no matter what.
  5. Who would you most like to swap places with for a day? The President of the United States.  I would like to see what a day in his shoes would be like. Really, I would love to see how the White House functions on a daily basis.
  6. What’s your secret talent that no one knows about? I love photography. I am just now getting back into it as I have taken a backseat to my son’s photography pursuit.

Annie Snelling, Director-at-Large, Webinars:

  1. What Region of TX are you in? Austin
  2. Tell us something we don’t know about you.  I fell into credentialing by accident and found I loved it. It drove me back to school and this year I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration at the “tender” age of 48.
  3. What lead you to be on the TSMSS BOD?  I am newly dual certified and attended my first NAMSS convention last September.  After seeing what great speakers and information are out there, I wanted to be more involved on the state level. I also want to make a difference and give back to the profession that has changed my life and see greater involvement and sharing of information between chapters, the state and with NAMSS.
  4. Who inspires you?  My mother.  She has faced many trials in her life, yet remains the most positive and encouraging person I have ever met. She is strong and independent. She is kind to everyone and always loving and supportive and always tries to see another’s point of view even if she does not necessarily agree.  She went back to school at 63 and earned her degree.
  5. Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?  Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper.  I would love a day in her life, taking something that is less than appealing and making it something fabulous.  It is my goal to buy a fixer upper in the future and make it a stunning home.
  6. What’s your secret talent that no one knows about?  I am an avid painter.  I love drawing, painting and doing anything “crafty”.

If you’d like to continue to get to know Dee and/or Annie, please reach out to them at DeAndraC@BaylorHealth.edu and Aurie.Snelling@scasurgery.com respectively. They would love to get to know you too, and they welcome your ideas to further our mission!

Legislative Update

The Texas Medical Board was one of several state agencies that had to receive a vote to be extended during the special session of the 85th Texas Legislature.  The Legislature did approve an extension until Sept 1, 2019. If, for some reason, the TMB was not renewed, this would have impacted the ability for new doctors to become licensed in our state. Below are two links that you may want to bookmark.

Texas Sunset Advisory Commission – the overall listing of affected agencies and description of the sunset process.

Final Results – specific to the TMB; summarizes results of the Sunset review, including management actions directed to the agency that do not require legislative action.
